Longannet closure announced: UK’s 2nd biggest power station to close within a year
March 23, 2015

Operators of Scotland’s remaining coal fired power station are set to announce its closure within the next year, after missing out on a National Grid contract. Not only does this mean that Scotland’s demand for blood-soaked coal from Colombia and other places will end, but also that numerous new opencast sites in the Central Belt of Scotland that relied on Longannet as a buyer of their coal will almost certainly not be going ahead. These include Glentaggart East in South Lanarkshire and Cauldahll in Midlothain, both the subject of hard-fought campaigns against them and operators Hargreaves/Scottish Coal. More to follow.
